Vestibular Rehabilitation incorporates physiotherapy prescription of exercise and manual therapy to treat symptoms of imbalance, vertigo and dizziness.
Your vestibular system consists of parts of the inner ear and brain that are responsible for maintaining balance. Damage or irritation from infection and other causes can result in imbalance, vertigo or dizziness.
Vestibular Rehabilitation exercises are used to help the brain learn to adjust to a vestibular hypofunction, or to help desensitise the brain to vestibular stimulation. Just as exercise for muscles must be correctly chosen and the degree of difficulty gradually increased, your Physiotherapist will find the precise level of exercise that your brain needs in order to reduce your symptoms, and adjust your exercise program to keep your brain challenged as you improve.
